Alene Smith Carpenter Carroll

Mrs. Alene Smith Carpenter Carroll departed this life on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 in her home at the age of 98. She was born in Sellersville, PA to parents Ernest and Mayme MacKay Smith.
She is survived by her dear husband, Paul George Carroll of Bracey, VA; her son Timothy R. Carpenter and his wife Nancy of Danville, VA; her three step-daughters: Joyce Buchanan and her husband Barry of Newport News, VA, Patricia White of Newport News, VA and Deborah Buckley of Yorktown, VA; her step-son, Paul George Carroll, Jr. of Hyattsville, MD; nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and her sister Alice Bastian and her husband Jack of Corning, NY. Mrs. Carroll was predeceased by two sons: Claude R. Carpenter and Charles J. Carpenter, ll.
Mrs. Carroll grew up in Mansfield, PA and was a graduate of Mansfield University, Class of 1941. Mrs. Carroll retired from the Department of Health and Human Services as their Executive Housekeeper having been certified by the National Executive Housekeepers Association of which she also was a member. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Washington, DC, a life long member of the United Methodist Church, holding many offices in the different Methodist churches she was a member of. She also was a member of the Ebony Homemakers Club, active in Girl Scouts as a leader and was a den mother for the Cub Scouts. She also had membership in the Clan MacKay Society of USA since she was descended from the Scottish Dynasty of General Hugh MacKay, who served in the British Army. Mrs. Carroll wrote poetry, some of which were published in nationally circulated magazines.
A funeral service was conducted on Friday, June 16 at 11 a.m. in Prospect United Methodist Church in Ebony, VA with interment to follow in the Prospect Cemetery. The family received friends starting at 10:00 until service time in the church. Online condolences may be sent through Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Carroll family.
