Carolyn Sue Cox Layne

Carolyn Sue Cox Layne, of South Hill, died Wednesday July 19, 2017.  Ms. Layne was born 72 years ago and raised in Farmville, VA by her mother Katherine B. Cox.  After marrying, Carolyn raised her children on the Layne family farm in Cullen, VA.  She earned an associate degree in Business Administration from SVCC, then relocated to South Hill, where she worked for the Virginia Dept. of Transportation until she retired.
Carolyn was happiest when surrounded by friends and family.  She is survived by Tommy Layne & wife Crystal of Farmville, VA; Mary Layne Keifer & husband Tom of Charlotte, NC; Edward Layne & wife Sharon of Cullen, VA; and Christopher Layne of South Hill, VA. Carolyn cherished her six grandchildren: Katie Keifer, Michael Keifer, Macy Sykes, Adam Layne, Joseph Layne and Kayla Claiborne. 
A memorial service will be held at 6pm Friday, July 28 at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home, South Hill, VA, with a visitation following the service.  A graveside burial service will be at 10am Saturday, July 29 at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, VA.

Katherine Lucille Boyd Crenshaw

Katherine Lucille Boyd Crenshaw, was born to the late James and Mary Belle Boyd on August 21, 1921 and departed this life on Friday, July 21, 2017 at The Hundley Center, VCU Community Memorial Heathcenter in South Hill.
Katherine was born in Bracey, VA where she attended The Carol Boyd School and later graduated from Mecklenburg County Training School in 1941. She moved to New York where she fell in love and married the late Robert Haney Crenshaw. After World War II, she returned to her hometown of South Hill working at Community Memorial Hospital and retiring in 1989. She joined St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at an early age, but later transferred her membership to Trinity Episcopal Church where she became active in many organizations until her health began to fail.
She leaves to cherish fond memories her daughter, Sylvia Crenshaw Beaty; sons, Larry Crenshaw (Annie) and Fenton Crenshaw (Costella); one sister, Harriet Cannon; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; special friends, Dorothy Thompson and Lucy Alexander and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were held Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at Trinity Episcopal Church with The Rev. Harry V. Nevels, officiating.

Edith Arbeeny Nanney

Edith Arbeeny Nanney, 84, Alexandria, VA, formerly from South Hill, VA passed away July 19, 2017. She was predeceased by her parents John and Eva (Edith) Arbeeny; brother, John Arbeeny; grandson Bryan Lawler, and son-in-law Craig Bowlus. She is survived by her husband, Harry Nanney, four children: Beverly Bowlus, Karen Lawler (Bob), Ellen Hale (Marlow), and Stephen Nanney; six grandchildren: Katie Bowlus, Emily Bowlus-Peck (Sam), Jay Lawler, Marie Lawler, Michelle Lawler, and Nicholas Hale; and her brother Al Arbeeny (Mary) and sister-in-law Renee Arbeeny.
Edith was born November 19, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from high school, she worked on Wall Street. During the Korean War, she was a USO girl which is where she met Harry at a pancake supper while he was stationed in Brooklyn as a U. S. Coast Guard Seaman. She moved to South Hill, Virginia after her marriage. She was the bookkeeper and manager of the office supply division of The South Hill Publishing Company which included the weekly newspaper The South Hill Enterprise for over 40 years. She served on the parish council as bookkeeper for the Church of the Good Shepherd in South Hill. She loved to entertain and her Christmas Eve open house was a fun event held annually for family and friends. Over the years she had many hobbies including cross-stitch, painting ceramics, playing bridge, and baking. 
Visitation will occur on Saturday, July 29th, from 6-8pm, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home at 9902 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA 22032. A Catholic service will be held on Monday, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 310 Royal St., Alexandria, Va 22314. Gravesite interment will immediately follow at Fairfax Memorial in Fairfax, VA. Margaret Hazelwood Seamster

CHASE CITY, VA—Margaret Hazelwood Seamster, 70, of Chase City, Va. passed away on July 20, 2017. She was the widow of David Michael Seamster. Margaret was a retired employee of Jones Apparel and a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. She also volunteered at the Chase City Food Bank.
She is survived by her children, Judy Songer, Thomas Lewis, Bobby Lewis and Jackie Lewis; brothers, Ronald Hazelwood, Roger Hazelwood, and Sam Hazelwood; sisters, Carrie Williams and Mary Newcomb; and nine grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Wood Funeral Chapel. Interment followed at Public Fork Christian Church Cemetery.

Joyce Ann King Reed

Mrs. Joyce Ann King Reed, age 69, of Gasburg Rd, Brodnax, died Monday, July 17, 2017 at her residence. She was a former employee of Virginia Quilting and the widow of Glenn Webster Reed. Mrs. Reed was predeceased by her mother and step-father, Hattie Belle Edenbeck and Jasper “Jake” Edenbeck, and a sister Mary K. Tucker She is survived by two sons; Chris Reed and wife Bobbie and Jason Reed and wife Becky all of Gasburg, a sister Lottie Edenbeck of Roanoke Rapids, NC , six grandchildren; Emily, Megan, DJ, Kayla , Nick and Jayden and one great grandchild, September. A funeral service will conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. in Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Gasburg, Va. with interment in the Reed Family Cemetery, 1603 Gasburg Rd., Brodnax, Va. Lorene Jones Tanner

Mrs. Lorene Jones Tanner passed away peacefully on Monday, July 17, 2017 in Cary, NC.  She was born June 16, 1921 in Warrenton, NC and lived most of her life in Palmer Springs, VA.  She attended Women’s College of NC in Greensboro, NC and worked for many years at the Bank of VA in Boydton, VA.  She and her husband were active members of Grace Episcopal Church in Palmer Springs.
Mrs. Tanner was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Thomas “Jake” Tanner and sons, Joseph Speed Jones Tanner and Joseph Speed Jones Tanner, II.  She is survived by her children Tom Tanner (Leone) of McLean, VA, Nancy Tanner Mazzocchi (Leo) of Cary, NC, and Pettway Tanner Brands (Dick) of Taylorsville, NC; daughter in law, Verna Tanner  (widow of Joseph) of Palmer Springs, VA and 8 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Lena Kidd Arrington

Mrs. Lena Kidd Arrington, age 77 of South Hill, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017 in VCU/Community Memorial Hospital. She was a former business manager of the radiology department at Community Memorial Hospital and the widow of Marvin L. Arrington. Mrs. Arrington is survived by her sons; Mike L. Arrington of South Hill and G. Blake Arrington of Stuart, Va. A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:00 noon until the hour of service. Yvonne Bowen Sizemore

SKIPWITH, VA—Yvonne Bowen Sizemore, age 81, of Skipwith, Va. passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017. She was born on March 16, 1936 in Virgilina, Va. to the late Willie Wise Bowen and Elizabeth Blanks Bowen. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Robert Conrad Sizemore; and two sisters, Hilma Joyce Allen and Edith Bowen Cook.
Yvonne is survived by two daughters, Donna Sizemore Hale and her husband, David of Burke, Va. and Lisa Sizemore Lowman and her husband, David of Red Oak, Va; three grandchildren, Courtney Lorraine Hale, Jakob Robert Lowman, and Hannah Elizabeth Hale. She is also survived by one sister, Betty Jane James of Clarksville, Va. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 17 2017 at 11 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church. Visitation began one hour prior to the service. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Joyce Gentry Hamblen

CHASE CITY, VA—Joyce Gentry Hamblen, 62, of Chase City, Va., passed away on July 14, 2017. She was a retired employee of Boswell Bookkeeping.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bill Hamblen; son, Dean Hamblen and wife Meagan; daughter, Kristy Waldron and husband “Sport”; brother, Raymond Gentry and wife Lilly; sisters, Alice Rutledge and husband Kenny, Sheena Eastridge and husband Paul; and a grandson, Charlie Dean Hamblen.

Phyllis Ann Carter

Phyllis Ann Carter, our angel, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 12, 2017. She was born in South Hill, Va. on April 25, 1965 and was 52 years of age. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Skipwith, Va.
Phyllis is survived by her father and mother, Charles Robert Carter and Linda Lacks Carter of Chase City; three godchildren, Aaron Flynn, Issac Walker, and Jacob Walker; four aunts, Mary Dawson of Chase City, Margaret Flynn and her husband, Randolph of Chase City, Anna Rogers of Brodnax and Peggy Carter of Chase City; one uncle, Marshall Carter of Chase City; special caregiver, Jay Edmonds; and three special friends, Nancy Mull, Patricia McPeters, and Brenda Stebbins.
A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruby Mullins Conway, age 73 of Tanglewood Shores, Bracey, died Friday, July 14, 2017 in VCU/Community Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker and the widow of Harvey Lee Conway, Jr.. Mrs. Conway is survived by her daughter Teri Bistarkey and husband Jim , a step-daughter Jackie Auerbach and husband Mark all of Bracey, two step-sons; Carson Conway also of Bracey and Mike Conway of Newport News, a brother Donald Mullins of Illinois, eight grandchildren; Grace Dooley, Bonnie Laine, Shelley Revels, Mark Auerbach, Jr., Wayne Auerbach, Carson Wayne Conway, Marie Avery and Michael Beal and eleven great grandchildren. Mary Magdalene “Mag” Walker King

Mary Magdalene “Mag” Walker King was born March 9, 1924 to the late Will Lee Walker and Sarah Jane Baskerville Walker. She entered into eternal rest and peace on Tuesday July 11, 2017.
She was a member of Pleasant Hill RZUA Church of La Crosse, VA where she participated with the usher board and hospitality committee, sang with the senior choir and was the Mother of the church. She was married to Clarence Lee King, Sr.
Mary was predeceased by one son, John Lewis Simmons; a sister, Carrine Gregory and six brothers, Melvin Walker, Joe Walker, John Henry Walker, William Walker, Ed Walker and Waverly Walker.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 73 years, Clarence Lee King, Sr. of the home; one daughter, Clara K. Mackey of Jacksonville, FL; two sons, William W. Simmons of La Crosse and Clarence Lee King Bey, II of Richmond, whom she raised; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, July 16, 2017 at the RZUA Headquarters and Conference Center, La Crosse, VA with interment at Pleasant Hill RZUA Church. Viewing will be from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service.

Robert Lee Brown, Jr.

Robert Lee Brown, Jr., 78, of Brodnax, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.

Robert’s life journey began July 21, 1938, when he was born to the late Robert and Minerva Brown. He was the third of five children (Charles Tanner (deceased), Willard Tanner, Virgie Simmons (deceased) and James Brown.

Robert was baptized at an early age at Prospect RZUA Church, Brodnax, VA, and was a member of Miles Bethel Memorial, CME Church in La Crosse, VA. He received his early education in the public school system of Brunswick County. In 1956, he was drafted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean and Vietnam War. His tour of duty took him to Korea, Panama and Vietnam. The best years of his military service were spent working for the Military District of Washington, Ceremonies & Special Events at Ft. McNair in Washington, DC. More than 15 years of his military service was served there. A dedicated soldier at heart, Robert continued to serve his country as Superintendent of the Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery. Even after his second retirement, Robert continued serving at Oris P. Jones Funeral Establishment.

On July 14, 1962, he married his best friend, Yvonne Mushaw, whom he remained loyal and dedicated to until his passing. They were married for 54 years. He was the proud father of their two sons, Darrell A. Brown and Derreck R. Brown.

After more than forty years of life away from Brodnax, VA, Robert and Yvonne came back home in 2006 to enjoy retirement, to care for Yvonne’s mother in her later years, and to serve in Miles Bethel Memorial C.M.E. Church as a member of the Steward Board, President of the Men’s Chorus and Chairperson for Ministry of Men. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping, visiting friends and family, watching politics and sports.

In addition to his devoted wife Yvonne and two sons, Darrell and Derreck, Robert is survived by: daughter-in-law, Robin Pena Brown and Christopher Johnson; brothers, Willard Tanner (Christine) and James Brown (Bessie); brother-in-law, Frederick Mushaw (Shirley); sister-in-law, Josephine Tanner; cousins, nieces and nephews; special family friend, Carolyn Newell and Keisha “the cat”; close family friends, Cindy Lopez, Elaine Hart, Isabel Arrietta, Anita Reed, Carolyn Goode, Pamela Jerman, Twinette Harrison, Franklin Evans; as well as doctors and nurses of Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, MD, VCU Richmond Hospital and VCU South Hill Hospital (Hendricks Cancer Center).

Alvie Edison Morris Sr.

Alvie Edison Morris Sr., 85, of Sandston, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, W.D. and Lizzie Thomas Morris. An orthotics and prosthetics lab chief for McGuire VA Medical Center and a lifelong member of Corinth United Methodist Church in Sandston, he was a Tech Sargeant in the Air Force and a veteran of the Korean War. He served in the Virginia Air National Guard as Crew Chief on the C-47 that was used to transport multiple governors, was a past Commander and service officer of American Legion Post 242, and a long-term volunteer of McGuire VA Hospital; he served over 2000 volunteer hours. Alvie was distinguished as the Federal Employee of the Year in 1972. Alvie was a member of many community groups, most notably the Sandston Recreation Association, and involved in Scouts, the Model A Ford Club, Sandston youth football and baseball, and the FISH program.
Alvie Morris Sr. is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 56 years; his sons, Alvie E. Morris Jr. (Amy) and Robin W. Morris (Marjorie); and daughter, Lisa M. Major (Brian). He had seven grandchildren, Joshua, Ryan, Edison III and Anna Paige Morris, Olivia, Brian II and Aiden Major. He is survived by three of his eight siblings, Freda Robinson, Betty Waldrep (Dave) and Rachel Allgood (Larnie); and predeceased by one sister, Barbara Moody (Cut); and four brothers, Walter, Gene (Sarah), Francis and Drewry Stuart Morris (Patsy).
Visitation was held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va. 23231 on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. A visitation was held on Thursday, July 13, 2017, from 12 to 1 p.m. at La Crosse United Methodist Church, with service at 1 p.m. with burial to follow at La Crosse Cemetery. Robert J. Komber

Mr. Robert J. Komber, age 82 of Bracey, died Sunday, July 9, 2017 at his home.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis C. Komber; a brother James Komber, and a sister Doris Canatella.
Mr. Komber was a U.S. Army Veteran and a retired supervisor for Falls Way Motor Equipment.

Doyle “Ray’’ Baber

Doyle “Ray’’ Baber, 79, of Brodnax, Va., passed away on July 3, 2017 after a short illness. He was born on May 18, 1938 in Arkansas, and moved to Brodnax in 2005. He is survived by his brother, James Baber and wife Peggy, sister Laveda Young of Arkansas, companion Effie Davis and their beloved pet Classy. He was predeceased by his daughter Janet Gayle and Rebecca Hayes, Effie’s daughter, who was like a daughter to him; several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Ronald P. Karpinski

Mr. Ronald P. Karpinski, 70, passed away on Thursday July 6, 2017 at his home with his loving family by his side.  Ronald was born on August 30, 1946 in Rome, N.Y., the son of the late Joseph and Angeline (Przybycien) Karpinski.  He was raised and educated in Rome and was a graduate of Rome Free Academy class of 1964.   On February 4, 1967, he married the former Kathleen V. Sroka at Transfiguration Church in Rome N.Y. The two loved and remained faithfully devoted to each other for the past 50 years, recently celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary with family and friends.   Ronald served his country during the Vietnam War by enlisting in the United States Air Force. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and received an Honorable Discharge in 1970. Ron and Kathy were owners of the former R K Kennels in Rome for many years. Mr. Karpinski was also employed by the City of Rome Fire Department, a job that he loved, for over 26 years.  He retired in 1999 at the rank of Lieutenant.  He was also a co-owner of Holly Grove Marina located in Bracey, Va. Throughout his entire life he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed spending his spare time sharing this love of the outdoors  with his family or friends.   Ronald was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He will be greatly missed but the love, wisdom, values and kindness that he bestowed on those who knew him will endure forever.
Ronald is survived by his wife Kathleen, a daughter Laurie and her husband Michael Coughlin of Taberg, N.Y.; a son Craig of Bracey, V.A.; two grandchildren, Joshua and Meghan Coughlin; his brother and sister-in- law Richard and Carol Karpinski of Littleton, N.C.; his brother-in-law Michael Sroka and his wife Patricia of Willington, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Ronald was preceded by both his parents and a brother Kenneth.  The Karpinski family would like to thank all the family, friends, and caregivers for their love, help and support during Ronald’s recent illness.
