Dalton Wayne Williams

NORLINA — Dalton Wayne Williams, age 20, died Wednesday, May 31, 2017. He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents Dennis Truman Williams, Brenda Kay Lynch Williams, and maternal grandfather, Jake B. Norwood, Sr.
Mr. Williams was a member of Zion United Methodist Church. He was employed as a roofer.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home.
The Revs. Richard Booker and Warren Cash will conduct funeral services at Zion UMC.
He is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Rita Williams; three sisters, Teri Lynne Williams (Timothy Nuss), Tiffany Williams Thompson (Shawn Thompson), Renee Williams Orr (Gary Orr); cousins, Arianna Hargrove and Shy’Anne Norwood; grandmother, Everlyna Martin Norwood; uncles, Glenn Norwood (Kathy), Ray Norwood; aunts, Faye Patrick (Ray), Bonnie Droze (Todd) and Connie Ross (Tony); nephews, Jayden Covert and Shawn Thompson III; and nieces, Skylar Thompson and Lily Orr.

Louise Harmon Smith

HOPEWELL, VA–Louise Harmon Smith, 88, of Hopewell, Va., passed away on Thursday, June, 1 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eli Harmon and Mary Lee Toone Harmon; husband, Herndon H. Smith; and son, Clinton H. Smith. Louise was a member of the Hopewell Federated Women’s Club, the Women of the Moose Hopewell Chapter 1180, Order of the Eastern Star Alpha Chapter #1, and Red Hat Society Hopewell Chapter. She loved serving her community and was a part of the Senior Citizen Advisory Commission and was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” award.
She is survived by her son, Warren H. Smith and wife, Katie; daughter, Julie S. Dauksys and husband, Chris; daughter-in-law, Lisa Smith Wead; three grandchildren, Laura S. McHale and husband, Jason, Daniel E. Smith and wife, Arly, and Evan P. Dauksys; one great-grandchild, Luke McHale; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service was held at the Hopewell Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Monday, June 5, 2017. Interment followed at Woodland Cemetery, 15 Cemetery Rd., Chase City, VA 23924.

Margaret Cline Owen

EASLEY, S.C.–Margaret Cline Owen, 91, of Easley, S.C. (formerly of Clarksville, Va.), wife of the late Richard H. Owen, Jr., passed away Friday, May 19, 2017. Born in Appalachia, Va., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Cline and Elizabeth McNutt Cline.
Mrs. Owen was a homemaker and member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was a people person who could light a room where ever she went, especially at the Legion Apartment Complex where she lived.
Surviving are her daughters, Patricia Gilchrist (Sammy) of Easley, S.C. and Phyllis Ann Munn of Bullock, N.C.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and three brothers, Jim Cline of Portsmouth, Va., Sam Cline of Mesquite, Texas, and Joe Cline of Phoenix, Ariz.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son-in-law, Francis Munn and a brother, Bill Cline.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Skipwith, Va.

Carrie F. Overbay

SKIPWITH, VA—Carrie F. Overbay, “ Kay” or “Freedie,” as she was called by family and friends, age 81 of Skipwith, VA and most recently of Fort Walton Beach, FL where she was living in a loving and caring Assisted Living Facility. Carrie went to join other family members on Friday, June 2, 2017.
Carrie was born on December 30, 1935 in Marion, VA and was the first born to James H. and Mable Thomas Overbay.
She was raised in Marion, VA and graduated from Marion High. In her early years, she worked for City Drug and later she made donuts for the corner restaurant. After High school, she attended Marion College. Deciding to leave Marion, she went to work for the FBI in Washington, but later moved to Richmond, VA where she began working for Allied Chemical as a Lead Shift Supervisor, from which she later retired. She was a respected supervisor who took care of her subordinates and they watched out and took care of her. After living and working in Richmond, VA, she later moved to Skipwith, VA where she built a home and enjoyed having a vegetable garden and the peace and quiet of a country life and neighborly friends. She always had a love for animals and seemed to always find a few in need of a good loving home.
Carrie was preceded in death by her parents, James H. and Mable Thomas Overbay, brother, Johnnie Overbay and her long time very close friend, Shirley Childrey. Survivors include her sisters, Sarah Margaret Baumgardner (Walter “Walt”) of Blountville, TN and Connie Johnson (Dwight) of Fort Walton Beach, FL, sister in law, Wilma Overbay of Marion, VA, nephews, Spence Baumgardner, Derek Johnson, Johnnie Overbay, niece, Carrie Sykes and many loving and close friends, especially Brenda Downey, who has so consistently shown her love. She is also survived by other extended family, Shirley’s sister, Jeanette Underwood (Harold).
Graveside services will be held at Woodland Cemetery, Chase City, VA on Thursday, June 8th at 11:30 a.m. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home prior to the graveside service. Lelia Ann Roberts Nunn

Clarksville, VA–Lelia Ann Roberts Nunn, 78, wife of the late Donald Virginius Nunn, passed away Monday, June 5, 2017. She was born in Farmville, VA on February 9, 1939 to the late Mary Pleasants Roberts and the late Ernest Roberts. Mrs. Nunn was a graduate of Bluestone High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Clarksville Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Holly Harper Nunn of Raleigh, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Ward and Gwen Tuck Nunn of South Boston, Va.; and grandchildren, Tyler Nunn, Forrest Nunn and Sierra Nunn. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Nunn was preceded in death by her son, Daniel Baker Nunn.
Funeral services for Mrs. Nunn will be held at 2:00 p.m on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Clarksville Baptist Church with burial to follow at Gravel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Reverends Jane Lyon and Joey Tucker will be officiating.

Peggy Ann Jacobs Newton

Clarksville, VA–Peggy Ann Jacobs Newton, widow of Ray Newton, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the age of 89. She was born on February 1, 1928 in Person County, N.C. to the late Maude Daniel Jacobs and the late Andrew Gattis Jacobs. Mrs. Newton was a retired housewife and a member of Nelson Baptist Church.
Peggy Newton is survived by her daughter, Sheila Newton Hart and husband, Phil Hart of Clarksville; brother, Joseph Jacobs of Roxboro, N.C.; grandson and his wife, Brian and Julie Stutts; and great-grandchildren, Cooper and Caylie Stutts. Also surviving are step grandchildren, David and Venita Hart and their daughter, Aleia, as well as Kenneth and Hope Hart and daughter, Claire. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Newton and Helen Garrett.

Katherine Terry Hite

Clarksville, VA–Katherine Terry Hite, widow of James Allen Hite, passed away on June 1, 2017 at the age of 96. She was born in Halifax County on October 19, 1920 to the late Mary Katherine Jordan Terry and the late Nathaniel Green Terry. Mrs. Hite was a 1938 graduate of Clarksville High. She worked with Burlington Industries for four years and then at Glover’s Pharmacy for 19 years before retiring. Mrs. Hite was a member of Clarksville Baptist Church.
Mrs. Katherine Hite is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Terry Allen and Betty Hite; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lee and Paul Fuller; grandchildren, Michael Hite (Angie), Tonya Hite, Paula Allgood (Kevin), Danielle Byington (Joe), and Greg Fuller (Beth); great-grandchildren, Paige Hite, Nathan Hite, Bentley Hite, Landon Allgood, Garrett Allgood, Kade Byington, Bracken Byington and Krissy Fuller.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 4 at Clarksville Baptist Church and entombment followed at Eternity Mausoleum in Oakhurst Cemetery. The Reverends Rodney Barwick and Joey Tucker officiated.

Mary Frances Owen Bailey

FORT MITCHELL, VA—Mary Frances Owen Bailey, age 81, of Fort Mitchell, Va. passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. She was born on June 30, 1935 in Lunenburg County, VA to the late Robert Henry Bohannon and the late Mary Lillian Owen. She was a member of Salem Christian Church in Fort Mitchell.
Mary Frances is survived by two sons, Bobby Bailey of Fort Mitchell, Va. and David Bailey and his wife, Karon of Abilene, Va.; one daughter, Donna Phillips and her husband, Bobby of Rock Hill, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Tanya Marshall, Kristy Elliott, Stephanie Phillips, Courtney Bailey, Russell Phillips, Casey Bailey, Tony Phillips, and Travis Phillips; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Watson of Halifax, VA; numerous nieces, nephews, and devoted friends, Arlene Newcomb and Carolyn Ward. She was predeceased by her husband, Earnest Bailey and brother, William Owen.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Salem Christian Church.
Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Cameron Austin Singleton

SKIPWITH, VA—Cameron Austin Singleton, age 15, of Skipwith, Va. passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2017. He was born on November 21, 2001 in South Hill, Va.  Cameron was a student at Bluestone High School. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, listening to music and riding four wheelers. 
Cameron is survived by his mother, Jennifer Michelle Seamans of Skipwith; father, Jason Scott Singleton of Clarksville; two brothers, Chad Bunn and Dustin Singleton; grandparents, Susie Seamans and Earl and Frances Singleton; great-grandmother, Polly Sandifer and great-grandfather, E. F. Singleton, Jr. He is also survived by his aunt, Christy Washburn and her husband, Everett; cousins, Chris, Hayleigh and Evan and friends, Jesse Morris, Adam Roark and Heaven Leigh. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Melvin Seamans.

Carol Ashe Bigger

Chase City, VA–Mrs. Carol Ashe Bigger, wife of Curtis Benjamin Bigger, left us to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at the age of 57. She was born on Febuary 15, 1960 in McNairy, Tenn. to Ardith Gatewood Ashe and Clyde Raymond Ashe. Carol received Master Degrees in Christian Education from Union University and Special Education from Longwood University. She was employed with the Mecklenburg County School System for 19 years as a Special Education teacher. Carol was very active in her community and her church. Carol served as a deacon, pianist and director of Vacation Bible School at Black Branch Baptist Church and a minister of Education and Family Life for 8 years at First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Mary Wood Garden Club, the Chase City Ruritan Club and the Southern Virginia Daylily Club.
Carol Ashe Bigger is survived by her husband, Curtis; mother, Ardith Ashe of Selmer, Tenn.; father and his wife, Clyde and Lovetta Ashe of Cornith, Miss.; sister, Sandra Ashe of Selmer; brothers, Ken Ashe of Somerville, Tenn. and Doug Ashe of Nashville, Tenn. She is also survived by close friends, Elsa Cristina Gailor and Mattie Forbes and her beloved pet, Sugar Behr.
Funeral services were held at Black Branch Baptist Church on Sunday, May 28, and burial followed in Woodland Cemetery. The Reverend Dr. Gene Burris and the Reverend Jane Lyon officiated.

William Andrew “Bill” Ball, Jr.

Mr. William Andrew “Bill” Ball, Jr., age 81, of Alberta, Va. died, Monday, May 29, 2017 in St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond, Va. He was a retired Senior Chief in the United States Navy with twenty-five years of service.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Hazel Hartless Ball; four sons: William A. Ball, III of Bremerton, Washington, Bryce Ball of Alberta, Darris Ken Ball (Sandra) of Richmond, Va. and James Edward Ball (Karen) of Columbia, Md.; a sister, Mary Riddle (Thomas) of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother Gary Ball; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents William Andrew Ball and Louise Taylor Ball; a son Timothy Donel Ball, and a brother James Ball.

Hazel Lee Writtenberry

Hazel Lee Writtenberry, age 82, of Gasburg, VA passed away May 11, 2017. She is the daughter of the late Sidney and Kate Lynch.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Junior Writtenberry; her children, Stacy Lee Writtenberry and Anthony Kent Writtenberry, Sr. (Kimberly Stagg); her grandson, Anthony Kent “A.J.” Writtenberry, Jr.; her sister Alease Spence and husband Clyde; her nieces, Barbara, Vickie and Melissa; and special family and friends, Darlene Kaye Writtenberry (Cliff Lewis), Steven Odonnell, Brenda Gayle Evans, Julia Clary, Smithy and Shirley Conner, Jesse and Faye Writtenberry, Dewitt and Shirley Doyle, and Nellie and Lee Writtenberry.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Hill Christian Church with interment in the old church cemetery. Kirk Anthony Shell

Kirk Anthony Shell born April 5, 1956 at Fort Lee Kenner Army Hospital to George W. Shell and Doris Rodwell Shell. Kirk transitioned on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at home, 976 Meherrin River Road, Brodnax, VA after courageously battling illness surrounded by devoted family members. He was preceded in death by his father, George W. Shell and stepfather, John B. Tisdale. Kirk was also preceded in death by his grandparent Leonard and Antonia Edmonds Shell and Willie and Mary Stith Rodwell; uncles, Clarence, Elmer and Andrew Shell, Calvin, William and Steve Rodwell; aunts, Patsy Lewis, Beatrice Lambert and Ruth Speaks.
He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Doris Shell-Tisdale; siblings, Kendell and Keisha Shell; uncles, Archer, Thomas Dwight and Clarence (Ruth) Rodwell; aunts, Mattie Zeola Christopher, Mary Rodwell (Joseph) Dickens, aunts-in-law, Hazel Rodwell Morris and Martha Valentine Rodwell; great aunt and uncle, Alice and Andrew Hendrick and one nephew and many cousins, one devoted Anthony Shell and friends.
Kirk grew up in Bronx, New York where he attended elementary and high school and completed three and half years at City College of New York. He served in the U.S. Army four years and received a honorable discharge after the failing health of his father. Since moving to Meredithville, VA, Kirk held several jobs lastly employed at the Burkeville Correctional Center.
Kirk enjoyed family life and friends and especially repairing old cars in his past time.
Homegoing service and internment will be held at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia, VA 23002 on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 12:00 (noon). Charles Edward McGinnis

CHASE CITY, VA —Charles Edward McGinnis, 75, of Chase City, Va. passed away on May 18, 2017. Charles was a retired employee of Burlington Industries and upon retirement, he worked with Lake Country Area Agency on Aging. Charles attended Mecklenburg Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hilda E. McGinnis; daughters, Dolores Hudson and husband Rodney of Buffalo Junction, Joan Hamlett Byrd of Chase City, and Gina McGinnis of Wilmington N.C.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Glaze and husband Jason, Nathan Hudson, Eli Hudson, Noah Hudson, Emma Grace, Joshua Hamlett, and Daniel Hamlett; nieces, Sharon Oslin, Robbin Talley, and a nephew, Darryl McGinnis. 
Services were held Sunday at Mecklenburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jason Hay officiating. Interment followed at Black Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Clarence Harding Stith

Mr. Clarence Harding Stith, son of James Archer and Martha Johnson Stith was born March 12, 1924 in Brunswick County, VA, and passed away on May 20, 2017 at his home in Alberta, VA.
Mr. Stith was married to Jeanette M. Stith and employed with Brunswick County for over 30 years as an Extension Agent.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 27 at Taylor’s Chapel AME Zion Church, Alberta VA, with burial in Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in South Hill, VA.

Mac Thomas Wilson

Mac Thomas Wilson, age 78, of South Hill died Friday, May 19, 2017 in the Hundley Center.  He was born June 3, 1938 in Cherryville, N.C.  He was a retired Mecklenburg County Public School teacher having spent thirty-nine years at Park View High School.  He was also a part-time park ranger for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District at the John H. Kerr Reservoir.  Additionally he taught evening classes for some time to inmates at the Baskerville Correctional Center, formerly known as Camp 4.  Mac received his bachelors degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. During his college years he enlisted in the Air National Guard of North Carolina and as a reserve of the Air Force.  He served for six years until he was discharged honorably in February 1962.  Mac was a member of First Baptist Church of South Hill.  He was predeceased by his parents, Manley Thomas and Josie Payseur Wilson of Bessemer City, N.C. and by a sister, Peggy Wilson Ormand. 
Survivors include his wife Cordelia “Dee” Williams Wilson, a daughter Betsy Wilson Tuck and husband Jamie, sons Richard Bacon Wilson and fiance Robinette, Robert Thomas Wilson and wife Robyn, two step sons Doug Boone and wife Jennifer, and Kevin Boone all of Henderson, N.C.; five grandchildren: Katie, Brooke, Megan, Dylan and John; four step-grandchildren: Melissa, Emilee, Kale and Seth.  He is also survived by two sisters-in-law Ann Jones (Herbert Leigh) and Nancy Thompson all of South Hill; one brother-in-law Dr. Frederick Ormand of Asheville, N.C. and several nieces and nephews. 
A graveside funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery, South Hill.  The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the hour of service at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Bill Wall

Mr. Bill Wall,  age 77 of South Hill, died Saturday, May 20, 2017 at his residence. 
He is survived by his wife, Patricia M. Wall of the home; three daughters, Shannon W. Lambert (Scott) of LaCrosse, Donna W. Worley (David) of Boydton, and Bethany W. Harris of South Hill and five grandchildren, Joshua, Jeremy, and Nick (Libby) Lambert and Ellianna and Olivia “Oliver” Harris.  Mr. Wall was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Hazel Wall; two sisters, Joyce Wright and Betsy Walter and a brother Charles “Chuck” Wall. 
Mr. Wall was a retired independent agent with Greyhound, a member of South Hill United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men’s Group.  He was also the founder of Midget Football (through the Britnell Foundation) in South Hill bringing football to children throughout the area. He was also the longtime owner/president of Youth Camps, Inc.

Albert Davis

Albert Davis was born May 16, 1934 and departed this life May 18, 2017. He was the son of the late William and Ella Davis. He was born and raised in Richmond, VA. He had five brothers and sisters, all who preceded him in death: Elsie Beverley, Catherine Martin, Bertha Cole, William Davis II and James Davis.
He was married to Hazel King Davis for 51 years. He worked for HyGrade Food, which later became Sara Lee for 31 years, where he retired.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Hazel Davis; two sisters-in-law; Charlotte Stone (Bobby) and Shirley King; three brothers-in-law, David King, Jr,, Larry King (Delores), and Daniel King (Mae); nephew, William Davis III (Sandra); nieces, Patricia Gray, Tammy Jackson (Brian) and Andrea Hayden (Raymond); special nieces, Ursula and MaKayla; special cousins, Norman and Rosa Smith; other relatives and friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 26 at Flat Rock Baptist Church, Kenbridge, VA with interment in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Pauline Toone Conner, age 88, of Boydton, died Saturday, May 20, 2017 in the Hundley Center. She was a former seamstress with La Crosse Sportwear and the widow of Ervin William Conner.
Mrs. Conner is survived by a daughter Marjorie Lawson and husband Raymond of Boydton: two sons: Lenwood Conner of South Hill and Clarence Conner and wife Donna of Baskerville; a sister Mildred Hale of La Crosse; nine grandchildren: Tracey Elam, Stephanie Hendrick, Sherri Bing, Lenwood Conner, Jr., Marsha Murray, Shelley Carlton, Tiffany Hedgepeth, Katie Conner and Paula Durham and nineteen great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter Anne Edmonds, and a son Michael Conner.
A funeral service was conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home with interment in Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, Baskerville. The family received friends Sunday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent through www.crowderhitecrews.com. Marie Valentine Holmes

Mrs. Marie Valentine Holmes, daughter of the late Matthew and Virgie Baskerville Valentine was born December 17, 1935 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia and departed this life May 15, 2017 in VCU-CMH Hospital, South Hill, VA.
She is survived by 4 children: Joyce (McArthur) Henley and Gloria (Ron) Plummer, of Richmond, VA; Calvin (Martha) Holmes of South Hill, VA and Ronald(Karen) Holmes of Owings Mill, MD; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Mary Jane Simmons, Brooklyn, NY and Virgie Pope, Richmond, VA; a special niece that was like a sister, Yvonne Coleman, a special friend, Rosa Chandler, and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 20th at Bloom Hill Baptist Church, South Hill, VA, at 11 a.m. Rev. Douglas Chandler officiating, with burial following in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until hour of funeral. Mrs. Marie Holmes may be viewed at the funeral home on Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.
