MCPS Assistant Superintendent headed to BCPS
Mecklenburg County Public School’s former Assistant Superintendent takes on the role of Superintendent in neighboring county.
As of July 1, Dr. Kristy Somerville-Midgette is serving as the Superintendent for Brunswick County’s Public Schools.
“I am excited, honored, and humbled to have been chosen as the new superintendent of Brunswick County Public Schools and look forward to working collaboratively with the school board, staff, parents and community,” said Somerville-Midgette. “I’m committed to providing all students with an exceptional educational experience.”
Mecklenburg Superintendent Paul Nichols said while Somervill-Midgette did a marvelous job during her time in Mecklenburg County, he felt “she was ready for superintendentship.”
Somerville-Midgette has years of experience in dealing with the inner workings of the public school system. Throughout her career she has worked in the education systems in Cumberland County, Hanover County, Lynchburg City, Norfolk City Public Schools and Mecklenburg County.
In Mecklenburg county Somerville-Midgette climbed her way up the ladder going from Principal of Bluestone High School, to Director of Secondary Education to serving as assistant superintendent for the past two Superintendents.
Along with having experience in the education system, Somerville-Midgette earned a Doctor of Educational Leadership from Liberty University, an Education Specialist degree from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Education and Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Psychology from Lynchburg College.
“I think that they(BCPS) couldn’t have chosen a better candidate,” Nichols said.
Nichols explained that he feels Somerville-Midgette will be successful in her new position and he believes all of the superintendents of Region 8 are looking forward to welcoming her.
While Brunswick County is gaining a superintendent, Mecklenburg County is now in search of an assistant superintendent. MCPS will be accepting applications for the assistant superintendent position until the position is filled.
