MCPS gearing up for back-to-school

With the new school year quickly approaching, the Mecklenburg County Public School system has a few important dates for students, parents/guardians and faculty to remember.
Any teachers that are joining the Mecklenburg County Public School System for the first time will be participating in new teacher orientation on Aug. 1, 2 and 3.
If your student is still in need of school supplies or clothing to start the new school year then you can take advantage of Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday, which will take place on Friday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 5.
Virginia’s Sales Tax Holiday, also known as the Tax-Free Weekend, allows all Virginia shoppers to purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear as well as hurricane and emergency preparedness items without paying sales tax.
Any school supply items with a value of $20 or less per item will qualify for the sales tax exemption on that weekend and all clothing and footwear items that are $100 or less per item will be eligible.
Another event focused on new teachers joining MCPS this year is Mecklenburg County Business Education Partnership’s Annual New Teacher Welcome Dinner that will be held on Aug. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in the Clarksville Community Center.
The annual dinner allows local businesses to sponsor new teachers and give the teachers a chance to meet and become familiar with the county’s businesses and residents.
The next date to mark on your calendars is Aug. 9, which is when Open House and fee day will take place for all MCPS facilities.
On Aug. 9 from 12 noon until 6 p.m., parents or guardians can stop by their student’s school to meet the teachers and pay the yearly fees.
This year the fees for elementary school will include a $4 fee for student planners for students in second grade through fifth grade that attend South Hill Elementary School and Clarksville Elementary School.
Fees for middle schoolers will include an $8 fee per course for sixth grade, seventh grade and eighth grade Art, a $5 fee per course for CTE supplies and an optional $15 fee for a gym suit.
For both middle school and high school students that will be taking part in band will need to pay a $10 for supplies and $25 for instrument rental.
Also, both middle schoolers and high schoolers will need to pay a $10 locker fee along with a $5 lock fee.
High school fees will include a $10 per course fee for Art, a fee of $17.50 for Accounting I Workpapers, $17.25 Advanced Accounting Workpapers, a $9.95 fee for a Nursing Assistant Workbook, a $15 fee for Nursing Assistant Uniform, $125 per course for Driver Education/Behind the Wheel, $25 per year or $12.50 per semester for a student parking permit, $10 per course for Photojournalism, $14 for FFA dues, $3 for Transcript fees, $10 for Diploma covers and $5 per course for CTE supplies.
After Open House and fee day is over only three days of summer remain for MCPS students.
Students are scheduled to have their first day of classes on Monday Aug. 13.
