Microsoft donates $10,000 to Vets on a Roll
The Microsoft data center facility in Boydton recently presented a $10,000 check to Vets on a Roll to support recreational therapy outings for disabled veterans on Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake at Island Creek Veterans Park.
Vets on a Roll is a nonprofit organization that provides therapeutic recreational boating outings for wheelchair-bound veterans of the armed services from the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Durham, and the Danville VA Community Clinic.
According to American Legion Post 45 Commander Thomas Loftus, the trips are not limited only to hospitalized veterans but are also open to all veterans throughout the area.
American Legion Post 45 of Clarksville has two pontoon boats capable of carrying four motorized wheelchairs and all necessary attendants.
The Island Creek Veterans Park is a unique facility tailored to the needs of wheelchair bound guests. It represents a public-private partnership between the Sgt. Earle Davis Gregory American Legion Post 45, the Roanoke River Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8163 and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District.
Over the past six years, the partnership has raised funds to construct ADA compatible walkways, bathroom facilities, a covered picnic pavilion and covered fishing pier at the Island Creek Veterans Park.
The park is open to the public during daylight hours. It is located on Townsville Road 4 miles from Route 15 next to the Tungsten Dam.
