Splash Park opening in time for summer

Occoneechee State Park will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday May 19, to mark the opening of its newest facility- a splash park. The ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the splash park. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The splash park at Occoneechee is the second of its kind across the Virginia State Park system. It allows visitors to enjoy water activities without the park incurring the cost and requirements of a traditional swimming area.
The splash park will enhance the family-friendly atmosphere of the park and will allow people of different ages and comfort levels to enjoy a water-based activity together.
This addition is expected to attract both out-of-town and local visitors to the area.
Hours of operation will be Memorial Day through Labor Day 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. weekdays and 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. weekends/holidays. A $5.00 parking fee is required.
Former governor Terry McAuliffe, joined by state Del. Tommy Wright and state Sen. Frank Ruff, broke ground on the $1.1 million project in April 2016.  Construction was completed by general contractor R.F. Howerton.
The award-winning Virginia State Parks are managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
