The ArtBank of Southside Virginia presents 27th annual performance series

Looking for variety and a great deal in live entertainment without driving to Richmond or beyond? Brunswick County, Lake Gaston area and the surrounding localities have quality programs and a bargain in concerts and the performing arts with The ArtBank of Southside Virginia.

With its 27 years of presenting an annual series and more than 335 programs to more than 87,600 students and adults, The ArtBank brings a broad selection of entertainment to fit every taste in music, dance, theater and more.

The series kicks off Saturday, Oct. 15, with Quill Theatre, a theatrical performance that features a crazy, irreverent high-speed roller coaster ride of a comedy through the Bard’s plays in “The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr (abridged).”

On Friday, Nov. 11, Rootstone Jug Band brings to the stage the music of primitive revival that conjures the sounds of Memphis’ great jug bands and songsters, Mississippi’s blues and fiddle masters and the blues greats and superb string bands of the Carolina Piedmont.

Gypsy jazz and more come to the area with Le HotClub de Biglick on Friday, Jan. 20.

February brings Celtic music and song to the area with the Mid-Atlantic region’s own IONA.

Richmond Ballet II returns with classic yet contemporary dance by the renowned State Ballet of Virginia on Saturday, March 11.

Classical music, as well as “A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra with Really Inventive Stuff,” arrives on Saturday, April 1, with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra.

The seventh program in the series features the State Theater of Virginia, Barter Theatre’s “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks” on Friday, April 28.

All performances take place at 7 p.m. in Lawrenceville at the Brunswick High School Auditorium unless otherwise stated.

All seven performances come with the purchase of a Series ticket. A Student Series ticket costs $10, less than $2 a performance. An Adult Series ticket costs $50. For a family with two adults and up to four children of the household, the Family Series ticket totals $100.

Looking to keep the arts alive in Brunswick County and the surrounding area? Consider a Patron Series ticket for $100. Individual program tickets are also available ranging in price from $12 to $15.

Additional events in which The ArtBank participates include the sponsorship of the 17th annual artists’ show at the Taste of Brunswick Festival on Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s show features Virginia Myrick, Karolyn Hawthorne, J.J. Thomas and Charles Hartwell.   The ArtBank also offers theater and musical programming to students and schools in the Brunswick County area, including theatrical performances by Virginia Repertory Theatre, and lecture/demonstrations by the Richmond Ballet and the Rootstone Jug Band.

Special events will again be featured as fundraisers to assist in continuing The ArtBank’s mission to bring visual and performing arts programming to the area.

The ArtBank remains a totally volunteer 501(c)(3) organization. Programming is supported in part by Local Government Grants from Brunswick County and the Town of Lawrenceville through the Virginia Commission for the Arts, as well as several programs made possible through special funding by the United States Congress for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Virginia Commission for the Arts with additional support from the Virginia General Assembly.
