Traffic stops leads to cocaine arrest

A Brodnax woman was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine following a traffic stop conducted on Hwy 1 near the Steel Bridge boat ramp on Monday.
The incident occurred just after 10:30 in the morning when Mecklenburg County Deputy Josh Watts observed Lakisa Saunders, 34, driving at a high rate of speed along Hwy 1, in the area of Redlawn Road.
Watts initiated a traffic stop and Saunders pulled over at the entrance to the Steel Bridge boat ramp.
During the stop, it was discovered that Saunder’s driver’s license had been suspended and she was issued two traffic summons, one for speeding and one for driving with no license.
While continuing to speak with Saunders during the stop, Watts beagn to detect the smell of marijuana.
Saunders was asked to step out of the vehicle consented to a search of her jacket.
During the search, Watts discovered a digital scale with a white powdery substance on it. After testing the substance, it was determined to be cocaine.
Saunders was additionally charged with possession of the substance, transported and remanded to Meherrin River regional Jail.
